Last week my daughter celebrated her 9th birthday. The weekend was full of parties, gifts, memories and chocolate cake. Like any 9 year old female going on 17 she was full of surprises.
On her actual birthday it was school picture day. What a fiasco that was. As she describes it, 'it was the worst birthday ever.' You see she had to wear what we approved for pictures which was far from her t-shirt and grubby jeans look. After telling her all her friends would be in the same boat she was off to school ~ super grumpy I might add.
During the day I began operation room make-over as a birthday surprise. She knew I'd some day soon paint her room but wasn't quite sure what day because I noted "It's going to be a busy week" with raised eyebrow just to throw her off a bit (not that she needed it after the whole picture day dress up thing).
Her color selection was her favorite color, a deep purple which of course was not going to fly with Dad no matter how much crying and pleading she doled out. A few weeks ago I spent a couple of days (and many hours) on the Internet looking for purple tween rooms and was exhausted. Finally at the local hardware store I found one of those paint pamphlets with an excellent idea.
I showed it to hubby and we had come up with a good compromise for submission to the birthday girl. Much to our surprise she loved it. It had a darker purple to match her needs and a lighter shade of purple to appease Dad.
While she was at school I spent the morning taping and painting. Our walls are a knock down texture so the straight line took quite a bit of patience and nothing short of focused determination.
When she went to her room to immediately change out of 'these' clothes as she puts it she returned with a big ole grin and a "Thanks Mom!" Thankfully the rest of her evening suddenly became a bit more tolerable for her.
Here's the finished product. My only question is: Right now it's a focal wall only. Should I paint the rest of the room to match? It's a pretty good sized bedroom so I think it could handle it but I know dark colors tend to absorb color making it seem darker rather than reflect it. Let me know what you think.

My daughters, who was 14 painted one wall hot pink, one wall black, one wall light pink and the last wall, splattered paint with the the pinks and black..it looks good..gave her freedom at the time to make that choice..now she's almost 19 and we have to paint again because she's "not a teenager" any more...GIRLS!!
My first thought upon seeing the photo is that you could bring in deeper purples with the fabric in her room.
But, overall, I like it!
I LOVE it!! I think one wall purple is enough...looks great!
I love it. I'd paint the entire room purple. I hate white walls!
I think it looks adorable! I painted my daughter's room hot pink back in the day & her bathroom is lime green. It's awful, really, but she always liked it...
I always say let them win a lot of the smaller arguments so you can win the bigger ones when you need to.
